When the Cultural Revolution ended, I was still a boy, and did not understand well what it was all about. I had a funny feeling about all those hot and passionate things. We could see the red insignias everywhere - red scarfs, the small red books and red flags. Therefore in in my memory this was a red tone era.

What I know about the Cultural Revolution is what I learned after it had finished. Afterwards there were certainly many discussions. I also tried to make a clear judgement from my childhood's memory. But who could say what was true and what was wrong?

The Red Tone series expresses my true feelings about the ten years of the Cultural Revolution. I want to show most of our generation's understanding about the Cultural Revolution. In my prints, the images of Chairman Mao and other examples are intentionally blurred, just as they were in my mind, not very clear. The obvious Chinese words are symbols of my current judgement. What I pay attention to in these images is just the material but not the historic events. Therefore I only use words like "exellent", "passed", "deposed" and some popular words from the internet.
