Ms. Wu Wanxi has reached the highest national level a printmaker can achieve in China. Her works were shown at the 16th and in the 17th National Printmaking Exhibition (the last and last but one top level printmaking exhibitions in China). But more than that: she received in both these exhibitions an award of excellence. Her speciality that have made her famous are female portraits in a special mixed media technique.

Education and Training

Ms. Wu Wanxi was born in Yuxi of Yunnan Province in 1977. In 1999 she graduated from the print department of Yunnan Arts University. After her graduation she became a teacher at Yuxi Teacher's College the same year. Currently (2007) she is making her Master of Fine Arts degree at Yunnan Arts University.

Wu Wanxi is famous for her special mixed media printmaking technique - a combination of oil-based and water-based colors. Her favorite subjects are female portraits from different periods of China's recent history and present - kept in light and soft pastel colors.

We received our first prints by Ms. Wu Wanxi in spring time of 2007. Her prints are mostly large. They are printed on a thin, simple Chinese paper that is not comparable to what collectors of Western art prints are used to. The paper consists of two layers, a thin top layer and a backing layer. The backing layer detaches easily from the top layer. We mention this as we think that collectors should know that. Although Chinese artists do have access to Western papers like French Rives paper, they continue to use the Chinese paper. The Chinese paper works better with the traditional Chinese printmaking techniques like the use of water-based inks.

Wu Wanxi's editions are very small. We have met so far editions of only 6 copies. Regarding the artist's level of recognition and the awards that she has received so far, makes her prints interesting for collectors and art dealers alike.

So far we have seen only female portraits by Wu Wanxi. They were made in the same soft style of light colors. The female portraits have made her famous.
