We at artelino encountered the first art works by Mr. Yang Yonsgheng in 2003 - about 5 woodblock prints in very small editions showing beautiful landscapes and folk scenes from Yunnan in vivid colors. They were soon sold out. We tried to get more copies and designs via the consignor but had no luck.

Then one day in 2006 to our surprise we received an e-mail directly from the artist. Mr. Yang Yongsheng had been admitted as one of very few out of ca. 20,000 applicants for the Ford Foundation. He is currently in Hawaii, U.S.A. to study at Hawaii University for a master degree in fine arts. Since then we are in direct contact with the artist and have begun to sell his art prints.

When we discovered that Mr. Yang Yongsheng was not only a well-known printmaker in China, but also a painter with exhibitions in Bejing like the China Art Expo in 2000, we encouraged him to consign a few of his paintings to us. He was a bit reticent and skeptical to consign to do that. The reasons are understandable. Paintings, different from art prints, are a unique, single art of work and cannot be reproduced. We could nevertheless convince Mr. Yang Yongsheng to send us 10 of his best paintings for an online art show and auction on artelino.

Modern Paintings in Traditional Techniques

Mr. Yang Yongsheng paints with Chinese ink and acrylic colors. The paintings are on Chinese rice paper that is mounted on backing paper. Often decorative borders with a fine texture were added. Rice paper, backing and the decorative borders reflect an old, traditional Chinese technique.

The artist told us that he has created only 50 paintings during his lifetime so far. He wrote us the following about these paintings (the text slightly edited by artelino).

"To be honest, I am very contradictive to sell them, because they represent the past more than 10 years of my most creative period. I could not find that kind of feeling and could not paint this kind of works again in the future."

Mr. Yang Yongsheng wants to say that his paintings are unique and that they represent what he was feeling at the time when he created them. It would not be possible to make works of the same kind at a later time. We can understand him only too well. And especially because his paintings are only a small number - about 5 pieces created per year. We are therefore very grateful to Mr. Yang Yongsheng that he has entrusted them to us for a sales event.

Impressions from Tibet

Yunnan province is the home for several dozens of different ethnic groups. Buddhism is deeply rooted among the original people of Yunnan. And there are strong ethnic and religious ties with Tibet. The climate is subtropical and the geography is characterized by mountains and jungles in the South of Yunnan province.

The colorful world of the ethnic people - their festivities, legends, customs and costumes, their everyday lives and the Buddhist religion - are dominant subjects for Yunnan artists. No wonder that many of the Yunnan artists have travelled to Tibet. A journey to Tibet is for Yunnan artists what used to be a journey to Italy for German writers and artists like Goethe or Dürer.

Mr. Yang Yongsheng makes no exception. He has traveled to Tibet in 1999 and came back with sketches, photographs, impressions and memories. The journey to Tibet influenced his works profoundly. This is especially true for the his paintings. They show Buddhist symbols, praying people, monks and ordinary Tibetans. Other works try to express the different colors and lights that you encounter in high altitude landscapes.
