About Chinese Prints
The First Yunnan International Print Exhibition opened on 13 September, 2008 in Kunming City, the capital of Yunnan province. Since the early 1980s the small Southern province of Yunnan in the southwest of China has developed into an important center for contemporary Chinese printmaking. Art professionals and art critics speak of the "Yunnan Art School".
Since 2003 artelino presents you art prints by leading Chinese printmakers in online auctions. Our early start in 2003 has made us a pioneer in the representation of modern Chinese print art on the Internet. At that time contemporary Chinese printmakers were practically unknown outside China,
On this page we present the artists whose works we have sold since 2003 and whose works have been admitted to this prestigious art show. One of the artists, Wen Mujiang, has even been awarded with one of only two golden prizes. Our congratulations go out to Mr. Wen Mujiang, and our special thanks to our art agent in China. She discovered Mr. Wen Mujiang at a time when he was still little known.
The images that we show are excerpts from the official catalog photographed with a digital camera and sent to us from China. We are currently still waiting for a shipment of our own catalog. The quality of these images does not reflect the works of art adequately. But for reasons of authenticity we publish them on this page nevertheless. You can find some of the works shown in the catalog in artelino's archive of sold prints.
The following text was taken from the preface of the official exhibition catalog. It underlines the importance and international character of this art show. Chinese art exhibitions used to be of mostly national Chinese character a few years ago. This has changed fast. Important art exhibitions in China have become attractive for foreign artists for reasons of reputation and commercial sales.
"The organizing committee of this exhibition sent letters to print artists in more than 40 countries soliciting contributions earlier this year, and later received positive responses and enthusiastic participation from many of them."
1879 prints from 1013 artists in 45 countries have been received. After two rounds of evaluation by eminent experts from home and abroad, eventually 179 pieces of works have been selected for exhibition, with two works awarded gold medals, four silver medals and six bronze medals.
The ratio between the number of the works received and that of the works selected is 10:1, which makes this exhibition an assembly of excellent works of high quality and variety. The exhibition maintains the diversity of contemporary global arts and glorifies the treasure of human civilization."
The woodcut print "Appearance No.2" won the golden prize of the 1st Yunnan International Print Exhibition.
When our art agent in China discovered Wen Mujiang he created his large woodblock prints on the balcony of his apartment. It was the only place where the artist had enough space to work. Much has changed in the meantime. Mr. Wen Mujiang established a studio of his own. The golden prize at the First Yunnan International Print Exhibition has established the artist firmly among the top printmakers in China.
Wen Mujiang works in woodblock technique. You find nearly 80 sold art prints in our archive.
For availability of his prints please watch our auctions or contact us.
Zhu Jiangxiang practices a wide variety of techniques and styles. His speciality are prints in black and white. The print published in the catalog is from the series titled "Cross Section". It shows young women in lush costumes from ethnic minorities living in border areas of Yunnan.
In our archive you find several sold copies of Cross Section No. 7 and other woodblocks and etchings by the artist.
If you are interested in art prints by Zhu Jianxiang, please contact us.
Mr. Zhang Guilin is especially strong in the technique of silkscreen prints. He opened the first silkscreen studio in China. Favorite subjects of the artist are depictions of fish and the old quarters and lanes of old Chinese cities that are now disappearing fast in the course of China's urban modernization.
If you are interested in purchasing his works, please contact us.
For a small archive of sold prints please go to Zhang Guilin archive.
Zhang Biao works in etching and in woodblock technique. The print shown in the exhibition catalog is from a small series of slightly surreal images titled "Water". The most spectacular art prints are his depictions of young children. The top designs are two portraits of the artist's daughter Fang Fang in nearly photo realistic style.
Zhang Biao is a very versatile artist of high craftsmanship. Our archive shows more than 30 sold art prints by Zhang Biao.
For availability please check our regular Chinese art auctions or contact us. Currently we can offer you several very rare designs. Prices for works by the artist have gone up distinctively in 2008.
Mr. Wang Yuhui is a leading painter and printmaker with a history of prestigious exhibitions outside China. His art works were shown at the International Art Fair of Basel and at the International Art Expo in New York.
One day Mr. Wang Yuhui personally eye-witnessed a car accident. Shocked by what he saw he started a series of paintings in oil on canvas titled Accident. In 2008 the artist began to create a series of woodcut prints about the same subject.
Currently we can offer you an excellent selection of art prints by Wang Yuhui - among them his new "Accident" series. Please watch our auctions or contact us. If you should be interested in purchasing a painting by the artist from the "Accident" series, we can arrange that for you. Although Mr. Wang Yuhui is in the group of leading Chinese artists, his paintings and prints are still available for quite reasonable prices.
Shi Yanqing is from Shanxi province. He became famous with his Villagers series. The series of 7 woodblock prints shows people from his small and underdeveloped home village. He portraits them with one common and simple gesture: each person holds one hand over one eye.
A former client of ours, the late H.T. was a passionate collector of art prints by Shi Yanqing. After his death his whole collection was entrusted to us. Therefore we can currently offer you a good selection of rare art prints by this artist. Please watch our online auctions or contact us.
Our archive holds about a dozen woodblock prints by the artist.
Luo Guirong is exceptional among the contemporary Chinese artists. One can rank him among about half a dozen artists who have become a legend at life time. His reduction woodblock prints in small editions are among the finest of contemporary Chinese printmaking. Copies of series like "Gone with the Wind" and "My Land and Me" are very rare and have recently been sold for record prices at a Chinese auction house.
Our current availability in art prints by Luo Guirong is zero. If you are willing to spend some money and if you have some patience, please contact us. We might have a chance.
Li Yanpeng is another one of the maybe half a dozen "legend at life time" printmakers in today's China. He became famous with reduction woodblock prints in small editions of usually 20 copies created in meticulous knife strokes and depicting the landscapes of the life of the rural population of the Loess Plateau, one of the poorest regions in China and the largest erosion zone in the world.
Our current availability for woodblock prints by Li Yanpeng is zero. You find a wonderful collection of more than 70 woodblock prints by Li Yanpeng in our art archive of sold prints.
Dong Jinfeng is a Yunnan artist deeply rooted in the folk art tradition of this province. We like especially his reduction woodblock prints in tones of brown with somewhat surreal images from the world of Yunnan folk legends. But the style of this artist is quite versatile as we can see in the depiction of the art work that Mr. Dong Jinfeng contributed to the First Yunnan International Exhibition. It is quite different.
Currently we can offer you a few rare reduction woodblock prints by this artist from the collection of the late H.T. Please watch our auctions or contact us.
In the past we have received only very few art prints by Hu Xinqiao. But those we have seen and sold were absolutely stunning. Please see our archive of sold art prints. His works are on a very high level of craftsmanship.
Our current availability is zero. Please do not miss the archive for Hu Xianqiao.
Few contemporary Chinese printmakers work in abstract style. Fang Limin is the leading artist in the category of abstract compositions. He is the vice-director of the printmaking department at the Hangzhou branch of the renowned CNAFA (Chinese National Academy of Fine Arts).
You find about 40 sold art prints by Fang Limin in our archive for Fang Limin. Current availability is zero. But if you are interested in purchasing a work by the artist, please contact us. We can probably arrange something.
