First Impression![]() Detail from Flowing Stream, 2005 copyright Zhu Jianhui We at artelino received our first consignment of prints by Mr. Zhu Jianhui in January 2006. The diversity of styles surprised us. While prints like "Faint Fragrance" show a masterful and serene still life with Chinese attributes, others like "Ancient Charm" are distinctively modern. Prints by Zhu Jianhui have been very successful in art exhibition since the late 1980s. The temptation to continue a successful style, and cherish it over the years and even over decades, is always present for an artist. Many artists do this and create for the rest of their lives images of owls or old farmhouses. But Mr. Zhu Jianhui likes to experiment and try new ways and challenges. Of the consignment that we received our uncontested personal favorites are Flowing Stream from 2005 and Quintessence of China from 2004. These very large print images are mesmerizing. They are masterly made, unique, and they carry a message that make each of them a milestone in the history of modern Chinese prints after 2000. Several art museums considered these works important enough to take them into their collections. Please note: The blurred look of "Quintessence of China" is not a flaw of our images. It is the design - intentionally created by the artist. Zhu Jianhui works in the technique of woodblock prints. The prints are limited editions, signed, dated, numbered and titled in Chinese. Editions vary from 50 for the "Fragrance" series to less than 15 for the artist's works made after 2000. Zhu Jianhui - as so many Chinese printmakers - does not create his works for a commercial market, but for his own fame. And that means prestigious exhibitions and museum collections!
