In 2008 artelino expanded the portfolio of art and artisan products to traditional Tibetan rugs. This page gives you a brief introduction to Tibetan rugs and tells you how you can buy one from us.

From Tibet to Nepal

After the occupation of Tibet by China in 1959 and the flight of the Dalai Lama to India, ten thousands of Tibetans found a new homeland in Nepal and India, bringing their rug making skills with them.

In the beginning the Tibetans knotted rugs in traditional designs and sizes (usually 90 by 180cm = 3 feet by 6 feet). In the early 1980s carpet making turned into a mass manufacturing. Designs, colors and sizes were changed to accommodate Western markets. The old, traditional Tibetan rug faced extinction.

All Hand-made Tibetan Rugs

artelino has started a project in cooperation with a Nepalese carpet manufacturer and old friend of mine to revitalize traditional Tibetan rugs.

Our initiative aims at supporting the art of traditional Tibetan rug making while following strict ethical principles. Our manufacturer in Nepal offers exemplary work conditions, No child labor - but a nursery and a privately financed elementary school for the children of the workers.

The rugs that we offer are original hand-made products of highest quality standard. Each 3 by 6 feet rug takes about 3 to 6 months to finish.
