Tibetan gold-plated Statue
Padmasambhava

We have added Tibetan statues in February of 2008 to our portfolio of art products. These elaborately, all hand-made and often gold-plated statues are a special and personal hobby of the owner of artelino. He saw them for the first time in the 1970s in Nepal and was fascinated by the high quality, the intricate work, the old tradition and last but not least by the low prices compared to the immense effort and the skill that are required to create such statues. This page is meant as a short introduction to these fascinating treasures and a guide how to purchase such a great piece of art and artisanship.

Metal Statues from Tibet and Nepal

Original Tibetan statues are a specialty of the Newari people of Nepal, who have practiced this art and trade for centuries, passing down techniques from generation to generation. The original and best metal statues are made according to the "lost wax" (cire perdue) principle, in which the molds are destroyed in the production process. Each piece is therefore unique. The best statues are made of copper and are plated with real gold. Creating statues in this way takes months and is an arduous task that requires skill and experience.

A decrease in Nepalese tourism in the 21st century due to political unrest and environmental problems have hurt the Nepalese economy. Many Newari artists have since emigrated to China, where they continue to practice their art and have found a new market for their work.
